Well I used to use a Beachcaster when I started. Not much use I,m afraid although they can be used very well for Spodding.
Carp rods are great though. I use 3 of them. 2 Daiwas and a Fox Warrior. I don't actually like Pike rods. I find them too stiff and cumbersome for the job. The stiffness also means that baits are far more likely to suffer damage on the cast, even fly off without some sort of elastic. I reckon this is why so many bank anglers use waders. I rarely use waders but I can fling a Mackerel further than most boys I know standing in the water.
As long as the Test Curve can cope sufficiently with a large double, don't listen to the Pike w*****s who tell you it must be "Dictator Z" this and "Powermesh" that. I've has 20's on my 2 1/4 Lb TC's and they cope beautifully. I also get a far better thump on the rod and no, it doesn't take all day to get them in. Use the right line and the correct reel and the rod will soak it up nicely.
Carp rods are also good for Winter fishing. Small baits on Mick Browns paternoster rig can be flung out with a 3 1/2 ounce lead....for miles.
If you go to AnglersNet.com...Peter Waller is selling some nice Pike/carp rods at the moment since he is more or less a full time lure angler. I don't think there has been any takers yet.
Failing that...E Bay, Brundall Angling centre etc.
Most places are now doing the Daiwa Vulcan X rods with a daiwa Bite 'n Run rell for about 60 quid. Brilliant value and the after care service from Daiwa is pretty hard to beat.
