I totally agree with the last statement, It disgusts me to see the way some carp anglers think they can fish for pike. Ive seen winter carp anglers put out a pike rod for a bit of action, then not have a clue what to do. I have even had one, come round to get me early one morning. He had woken up one morning to find that at some point in the night a pike had picked up his bait and he hadnt heard the run. He now had a deep hooked pike to deal with, to make matters worse he was frightened of the thing and wouldnt even hold it. Why fish for a fish that you are not prepared to handle. He decide that the best thing to do was leave it on unhooking mat and come and ask me for help. I was 60 yards away. I sorted out the fish for him and it did eventually swim off, after I refused to let him weigh and photograph it, the fish was about 17/18 lbs. Three days later I pulled a dead fish in of arounf the same weight, im pretty sure it was the same one. Please if you are going to fish for pike make sure you are man enough to handle one, if not get someone to show you, most pike anglers are more than happy to do this or stick to fish with gums. If you want to bivvy fish for pike, then try a heavy running lead with a back stop about 12 inches back and a medium set baitrunner, this does help stop the swallowing of baits, I fish with it often. Also get one of those ultra loud, annoying back biter alarms, because you have to get up and turn the thing off, so you wont sleep through a run.
