Subject: NIFC Free Form Video (#6) Discusses Elections/Abstentionism

Segment Six of the NIFC Free-form Video Discussion Series

In this segment co-host Pat Williams was joined, via phone, by Justin Turley, a California based activist who stood-in for the regular co-host Brian Wardlow.

Justin and Pat discussed the Republican Movement's involvement in elections, from the historic all-Ireland general election of 1918, to Clann na Poblachta, who despite holding the balance of power in 1948 were unable to succeed in bringing about any change regarding the partition of Ireland.

Other issues touched on were the 1957 general election when four Sinn Fein candidates were elected on an abstentionist platform as well as the significance of the principle of abstaining from the partitionist parliaments of Leinster house and Stormont.

Justin made reference to the Republican candidates who are standing on the principled platform of abstention in the forthcoming elections in the six counties.

Also, a number of comparisons were made between the non-sectarian Eire Nua proposals, and the current sectarian system where politics are based on “orange and green”.
