Subject: "Dig" @ Holy Well @ Graináin Fort

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

TO INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS INTERESTED IN IRISH ARCHAEOLOGY

LOCATION: PRE- CHRISTIAN, “ST. PATRICK’S WELL,” GRAINÁN FORT, Co. DONEGAL, FIVE MILES FROM DERRY

Dear Colleagues,

Basically there may well be a memorial erected next summer above an ancient well, which since early Christian times has been known as St. Patrick’s Well. The links to the national Saint and early Gaelic chieftains can be explained, on request, by way of personal background research.

I am interested in establishing links with any archaeological group/s that may be interested in carrying out a dig in the immediate vicinity of the Well. Some people, believe, that tracks on the land, seem to indicate that there may well have been quite a significant bee-hive type structure built prior to the Fort’s destruction by the O’Briens around nine hundred years ago. Such beliefs are of much local interest, but need to be tested.

All interested enquiries will be responded to immediately via rights.civil@googlemail.com

Thanking you for your kind attention to this communication.

Yours truly,
Deputy Herald-Clann O'Dochartaigh
