INITIAL LETTER TO KATHLEEN DOHERTY, TOWN CLERK'S OFFICE, DERRY CITY COUNCIL

Dear Kathleen,
A few hours ago The Mayor, Cllor Helen Quigley and the Junior Mayor, Emmet Doyle made an official courtesy call to our home to mark my mother's 99th birthday and to congratulate her also on being presented with the Celric Cross Award. The committee making the honour is based in Boston. One of the previous recipients was Raymond L. Flynn, former Mayor of Boston who was once the US Ambassador to Vatican City. To-day's visit was photographed by the local press.

However, in our discussion we covered the O'Doherty Clann Reunion in 2008. I do not have the exact dates at hand, but as I am sending this e-mail to Admiral O'Dogherty and his brother Ramon, our Chieftain, and Cameron Dougherty in the USA. They will inform me, hopefully, in the next day or so of the dates-I believe in July.

I feel that as 2008 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Sir Cahir Rua and the 420th of the Spanish Armada, known in Spain as The Great Enterprise, the Spanish royal family, and its government may wish to be provided with details with a view to a possible private visit in mind. I will be asking our Spanish clann to also make representations, ASAP, as the O'Doherty clan, with others helped save the lives of many ship-wrecked nobles, commanders, soldiers and sailors in 1588. I also know that prominent local clergy are quite supportive of my proposal, but I feel at this juncture an initial brief letter should be sent to Spain's embassy or consulate in Dublin, merely pointing out this upcoming series of events. The Mayor felt I should write to you IMMEDIATELY, and well before her term of office ends so that the above letter goes to Spain's representaives in Ireland, within the next four (4), and as early as possible.

Our Tower Museum has several artefacts from The Great Enterprise, and several of those divers who brought them up from the deep, are still alive. These points, and others can be made, and I feel that if interest is shown by the royal family or their government officials, we can put together a highly interesting and commemorative itinery.

If you's like to ring me, my number if 028-71-286359. I await with anticipatiuon your early response.

Thanking you for your kind attention to this communication.

Regards,

Fionnbarra Ó 'Dochartaigh, BA [Hons.],
