Subject: CIVIL RIGHTS MEMO

MEMO – To Whom It May Concern

• Museum of Free Derry and National Civil Rights Archives
• Location: Glenfada Park, nr. Free Derry Corner in the Bog side

1. Permission has been granted to the 1968 Commemoration Committee to link www.museumoffreederry.org to www.nicivilrights.org We hope such can be achieved over this week-end.

2. The 40th Anniversary Commemoration Committee choose this Museum as the most suitable location to hold the Derry launch the 1968 Programme of Events at the end of April, the day after the Linen Hall Library launch in Belfast. The launch of the Register of ’68 Activists and Supporters will also be held at the Museum, around the third week in July, on a Tuesday afternoon. The date has yet to be finalised. Further details will be sent on request via rights.civil@googlemail.com Please retain details of our Derry Office e-mail and Voice-mail, 028-71-286359

3. Families of those murdered or wounded on Bloody Sunday will be cordially requested to be the first to sign the Register. It will be used to promote local events, and as a referral record for an INTERNATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS RE-UNION, later this year. It is hoped to attract as many civil rights leaders as possible in addition to those who took part in marches or sit-downs. Please note a special appeal is being made to former stewards, male and female, whose heroism, without doubt maintained and promoted the anti-sectarian and non-violence philosophy and strategy of the civil rights cause. The local media have already expressed a keen interest in attending.

4. It is planned to present a plaque to the artist who designed the civil rights “Oak Leaf” badge in 1968, which has been adopted as our 2008 emblem. Such a presentation is a mere token of our appreciation of her imagination and undoubted talent reflected in this now globally-recognised logo. The sculptor of the nearby Bloody Sunday monument and his wife are already on the invitation list which is currently being drawn up-R.S.V.P.

5. It is planned to have a short historical video show at the start of the ceremony. It is intended to present an historic and iconic souvenir of the civil rights era to all those who attend this event-R.S.V.P

6. Those interested in travelling from Derry to the Housing Conference next Saturday are urgently requested to make contact as a mini-bus is on offer, while others may wish to be part of a car-sharing arrangement. Our contact details are given in item 2 above. N.B. Derry working group meets every THURSDAY evening @ 8pm @ ‘Knockavoe’. ‘Old’ and new faces always welcome!

Thank you for your kind attention to this correspondence. We would greatly appreciate the re-circulation of this memo to your friends and as many potential civil rights supporters as possible.
