solid as the Rock of Cashel

New York's Irish American Community is shocked and saddened at the untimely and unexpected passing of Ned Sweeney (48) at his residence in Woodside, New York City, on New Year's Day. He is survived by his wife Mary, daughters Sarah and Rachel, and sister - in - law, Anne Corbett, in Woodside, and brothers, sister, in - laws and other family in Ireland. For several years, Ned was employed as a foreman in bridge construction and maintenance. He was also a building superintendent in Woodside. Following the Sept 11th attack, Ned spent several months working in the recovery operation at Ground Zero. A veteran of the Irish Army, he served a number of tours of UN peacekeeping duty in the Lebanon, in the late seventies and early eighties.

A wake was held at the Kennedy - Roth Funeral Home, in Woodside, on Thursday evening. On Friday morning, the Tricolor draped casket, followed by family and friends, was led to St. Sebastian's Church by a bagpiper, where Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Michael Hardiman and Fr. Kevin Abel. The County Tipperarary N&B Association of New York was represented by its president, Martin Dunne. There was a large attendance of teachers and students from St. Sebastian's Parcohial School.

Ned was returned to Ireland on Friday evening where burial took place on Monday, in Upperchurch, Co. Tipperary. The Irish Army rendered military honors at the interment. One of his many friends stated that "the New York Irish would remember Ned Sweeney as a loving father and husband, a patriotic Irishman, a dedicated and loyal American, a sincere friend , and a great character who never failed to make us laugh. A great Tipperary man, he was as solid as the Rock of Cashel. "
