Members of the Derry Citizens’ Action Committee leading a demonstration across Craigavon Bridge in Derry on November 19th 1968. It is estimated that between 25-30,000 people took to the streets that day to assert their rights to freedom of speech and public assembly. The event attracted world-wide media attention and was a pivotal factor in speeding up the implementation of basic reforms from the Stormont regime.

Dedication

This pamphlet is dedicated to its author’s mother, the late mother, Mary Ellen O’Doherty, [nee Hegarty] and the many other women, both living and dead, who played an active role in the struggles for equality and social progress. While many of them may not have wished to be either publicly recognised or honoured within the communities they so selflessly served, they most certainly deserved to be so.

“Like the beauty and loveliness of passing seasons, kind hearts always leave the world a better place for us”.

Proceeds from this publication will be donated to the October 5th Association, a network of 1968 civil rights veterans and supporters, established in 1997, for the purposes of replacing its computing equipment and meeting other essential office requirements.
