PRESS RELEASE

Major boost for the Captain

The Dublin-based Irish National Congress [INC] which campaigns for “Freedom, Unity and Peace” is currently circulating 1,000 copies of an International Petition, launched a few years ago, by the Captain Kelly Justice Campaign which is co-ordinated from an office in Derry City. This major boost to the campaign to officially clear his name could raise as many as another 15,000 names to the petition launched shortly after his death in July 2003.

The “ INC News”, which is circulated world-wide, has reached hundreds of its members and supporters, with the paper petition enclosed. The Justice Campaign also has a presence on the Internet via www.captainkelly.org -it is actively supported by several other websites including that of the Irish Anti-Partition League, www.ia-pl.org

The “INC News” informs its readers that on “July 16th, 2003, former Irish army captain, intelligence office and founding member of the INC, James J. Kelly, died. At his death-bed family members promised to continue his 33-year long campaign for justice. Unexpectedly, within hours of his death An Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern TD, tells journalists, “Captain Jim Kelly acted on what he believed were the proper orders of his superiors. For my part, I never found any reasons to doubt his integrity”.

After his acquittal; at the Arms Trials in 1970, Kelly was denied his Army pension for a period by the administration led by Jack Lynch. The Captain Kelly Justice Campaign are petitioning the government “….calling on An Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, TD, and both houses of the Oireachtas…to immediately activate whatever political and / or legal measures necessary to clear the good name of this recently deceased Irish Army captain….”

The campaign, which has the support of the Captain’s widow, Sheila, family members and a wide network of friends, was initiated by a Derry-based author and historian, Mr. Fionnbarra O’Dochartaigh. He is a pivotal figure within the October 5th Association [OFA], a network of 1968 civil rights veterans and supporters, established in 1997. O’Dochartaigh was a co-founder of NICRA in 1967. The OFA over the years has expanded its influence mainly via the Internet, AND also created the Irish Rights Watch site, www.irishrightswatch.org Updates on its work at home and abroad can be obtained from its central office on rights.civil@googlemail.com
