The Late Cllor. Ivan Barr, Strabane, Co. Tyrone

With shock and sadness we learnt early to-day of the demise last night of Strabane SF Councillor, Ivan Barr, a former chairman of the N. Ireland Civil Rights Association. We acknowledge with thanks the many messages received at the CR Vets office since early this morning, Ivan recently was appointed a member of the 1968-2008 Civil Rights Commemoration Committee, but was unable to attend any meetings. Although extending his apologies for non-attendance, he never conveyed the reasons why. We now know such was because of serious illness. His death comes as a blow to all those who are currently engaged in commemorating the 40th anniversary of the transformation of NICRA from a mere lobby group into a mass movement for civil rights across the Six Counties and beyond, following the dramatic events on Derry’s Duke Street on Oct. 5th 1968.
.
As fellow veterans of that era we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his immediate family, comrades and friends.

We salute his endeavours during a near life-time of struggle.
May his memory remain evergreen. May he and others comrades rest in peace.
