Subject: Irish-Basque Solidarity

show details 04:47 (10 hours ago)

I forward you the item below -- it is the first I have heard of Amnesty getting involved in defending Basques from the Spanish state; some time ago I wrote the Irish office asking them to do something and they said they would discuss it, but they never got back to me. If anyone gets the full text of the Amnesty statement, please send me.
Also, please be advised that International Week of Solidarity with the Basque country is 18th -- 24th. The Dublin Committee plans to hold a picket on Saturday 23rd at GPO at 12 noon -- put it your diary and pass it on. We also plan to have postering (authorised by Dublin City Council) Saturday 16th (time to be arranged) or Sunday 17th, so please email me your availability. We will be looking for support from a few other organisations also. There will also be activity in Belfast and in Cork, as well as in many other places around the world. We seek your solidarity in this; please advise if you will be supporting.

We also hope to be organising a new DVD showing (about the txalaparta percussion instrument) along with a few political ones from the Basque country -- more details as venues are arranged.

Later on in the year, a Basque International visit is expected in Ireland and we will also be organising one (or two, if we have enough) to go to the Euskal Herria. Dates will be given as soon as we have them (but wouldn't hurt to indicate an interest now). Participants will need to organise and pay for their return journey; also for their bed and board, but that will be organised by Basque comrades, as well as a full programme of visits to different venues around the country.

Looking forward to seeing you and your friends in the activities to come, Lagunak.

Diarmuid
