Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform
94 St. Stephen's Green

Re: Mr Noel Maguire, HMP Full Sutton, Stamford Bridge, York, England.

Brian, a chara,

I am writing to support the repatriation of Mr Noel Maguire from HMP Full Sutton to a prison in Ireland.

Mr Maguire is currently serving a 22 year sentence and was convicted in November 2001 with co-defendants Mr James McCormack from Dundalk, and Mr John Paul Hannon from Belfast. Mr McCormack was repatriated to Portlaoise prison approx 18 months ago at his own request, and Mr Hannon was repatriated to Maghaberry approx 2 years ago. Mr Maguire however has applied for repatriation on three occasions but his applications have been turned down.

Mr Maguire who was born in Co. Fermanagh holds an Irish passport and is the last Irish republican prisoner in England. His wife, Sharon and two children, Jessica aged 11 and John aged 15, live in Co. Carlow where he himself resided and worked for a time in the family home. Mr Maguire has not seen his children in over seven years but has maintained contact with them by mail. Mr Maguire has two sisters – Madonna and Martina who both live in Co. Fermanagh. He has no relatives living in England and his sole visitor is a non relative from England.

Although Mr Maguire and his wife are now parted, they both would like to opportunity to receive visits should he be repatriated to Portlaoise. Mrs Maguire has formally put in writing her willingness to visit her husband to confirm this. This correspondence was submitted with Mr Maguire’s last application for repatriation.

Since Mr Maguire’s imprisonment he has been attacked by two non Irish prisoners in Full Sutton and received cuts to his arms and hands needing hospitalisation for a time. He presently believes his life is in danger.

Considering Mr Maguire’s extenuating circumstances I would request that you reconsider his application for repatriation to Ireland to serve the remainder of his sentence closer to his family.

I trust that you will look upon this request without prejudice and do your utmost to help resolve this problem.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information or have any further queries.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Is mise le meas,

Gerry Adams MP, MLA
