If I remember about the magnetite--it was exposed in both episodes. The earth's layers were open and that is where they were pulled into it. The layer shown wasn't that wide so maybe it has to be out in the air. These SS have stainless steel vertebrae of alien manufacture--maybe there is a magnetic pull of some sort. I don't know that much about magnetite but I see the word magnet in it and so it makes sense to me that this "magnetic" pull comes from the natural magnetic attraction of magnets to metal.
