KJV Deuteronomy 24:19-22 "When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing."

I continue each day to find it amazing how God's instruction to the children of Israel, as they trekked toward, and came near to the promised land, in Old Testament times, is still good for us today, in 2005. Many times we think that the teachings of the OT, are not for us today, yes we are under a new covenant, a blood covenant of Jesus Christ, however that doesn't mean we shouldn't apply the Biblical teachings of God to our lives today from the Old covenant principles. All are even covered under the NT covenant anyway. Remember Jesus said in John 13:34,35 "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
Think about the scriptures in Deuteronomy 24, and apply them to today... God told the children of Israel that if they cut down their harvest, and leave a sheath of anything in the field, to not go back and get it, He also told them to not go back and get any olives after shaking the olive tree, or to not go back and gather grapes in the vineyard after they had gathered them. God told them that these remnants were for the widows, for the stranger, and for the fatherless, in other words for the poor and homeless people. I believe god is telling us today, when we fix our meals, and we have extra, not go back and eat it all up, that when we pay all of our bills and there is money left, that we shouldn't go right out shopping and blow it, just because we have extra, God is telling us today that when we shop and get all we need, and have extra, we shouldn't hoard it all up and hide it, or when we have clothes in our closet that we don't need, we shouldn't just throw them away, or let them just sit there, not being used. Comparing today's life that we have, with that of the Children of Israel, we should use these extra things to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, and help the needy. There are people right here in the GREAT Ol' USA that is going hungry tonite, that are sleeping in a car, because they do not have a home, or even worse, sleeping on the street because there is no shelter that will accept them, or because they are full, and have no room. When God has blessed us with enough to fulfill our needs, and an over abundance, He gives it to us that we may be able to help others in times of need.
You say that you don't have extra, that all you have is barely enough? Well in that case you have time, God is giving you time to pray for those in need, to truely intercede and seek God, for those that are needy. Just because you don't have extra "goods" to give people, you do have extra to give God....Prayers are just as good, when that is all you have.
If we will love one another, as Christ loves us, then we would be fulfilling these needs, that all men would know that we are children of God, disciples of the Most High, striving towards the mark of the High Calling of God.
