WHAT GORDON CAMPBELL DIDN'T TELL YOU LAST NIGHT

Just one day after giving a speech in which Gordon Campbell took to the airwaves to blame the Liberal government's current crisis on the previous administration, BC's Auditor General has released a report that puts the lie to Campbell's claims.

While Campbell claims that the NDP's spending was unsustainable, the Auditor General's report shows that, compared to other provinces, B.C.'s economy was
the second most able to support government spending and revenue raising practices over the last five years.

In the accompanying news release, the Auditor General also points out that "Another widely used indicator of government financial performance is its
credit rating. BC has kept its high standing in the international financial market, although its ranking among provinces has dropped to second, after Alberta."

You can read the report on line by going to:

The BC Liberal Party's partisan broadcast on Global TV last night omitted mention of a few other important facts.

The Liberals inherited a $1.5 billion surplus and the second lowest per capita debt load in Canada. Both the Auditor General and the Liberal's own fiscal panel confirmed the surplus.

You can see for yourself by looking at the documents on the
government's own web site. On page 9 of the Ministry of Finance Public Accounts for 2000-2001, you'll see how the $1.5 billion surplus is accounted for.

The full version of Public Accounts for 2000-2001 includes the report from the Auditor General on pages 17 and 18. Click the following link to view the PDF:

Gordon Campbell gave BC's surplus away in a reckless tax cut that transferred almost $2 billion to big corporations and BC's wealthiest residents.

According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives the vast majority of the tax cuts benefits will go to the richest British Columbians - 52 per cent of the benefit will go to the top 13 per cent of taxpayers, and a full
20 per cent will go to the very top 1.1 per cent.

Thanks to the tax cut, the Campbell government has quickly turned a surplus into the largest deficit in BC's history.

Now Gordon Campbell wants you to pay for his gift to his rich friends by cutting your services...

-- he has cut health care services
-- he has increased your MSP premiums
-- he has scrapped the tuition fee freeze that makes education affordable
-- he has cut education and increase class sizes
-- he has lowered the minimum wage
-- has cut funding that protects children and families in need
-- he has cut environmental protection

All to pay for his tax cuts for wealthy British Columbians and big business. That's why over 40 economists recently wrote an open letter to GordonCampbell explaining that the Liberal government is making major mistakes in fiscal policy and must rethink its plan for spending cuts.
