Subject: Gatineau Apartments With Pets Together

The first thing to understand is that pets and apartments are not always the ideal match. That won’t dissuade any pet lover, of course, but understanding this truth is important to how you organize your housing.

Apartments in Gatineau, as elsewhere, do not offer the same convenience for pets to roam. You cannot just open the door to let the dog out or to let the cat out. There is much less room for a large animal to wander within the confines of an apartment, especially if it is just a one-bedroom apartment.

And then there are the issues of noise and smells. In the privacy of your own home, you also have issues of noise and smells, but you don’t have the same issues with neighbours, because neighbours are not as close. In an apartment, you share a corridor with perhaps a dozen other people.

Before choosing an apartment, it is important to know if pets are even allowed. Most apartments do allow pets, but not all of them do, so make sure to either ask or to read the fine print. Fine print is called “fine” because if you break the rules, you could face a fine. (No that is not really what it means, but a fine and/or eviction could be the result.)

There are buildings that might not ban pets, but might place restrictions on them. For instance, pets allowed, but they must be in a cage in the public areas, such as the lobby, the corridors and the elevator. So a Great Dane might not be the logistically possible in such apartments, whereas a small dog, a bird or an aquarium would be fine.

In other cases, exotic animals might be forbidden. While it is an urban legend that a crocodile could pop up in your Ottawa apartment toilet, some people still don’t like the idea of snakes and lizards on the loose in the halls. And raising an alligator in your bathtub is not something every superintendent will put up.

Some buildings don’t have the best insulation between units, and even if there is no fine print about pets, there might be fine print about noise. This is when an aquarium of fish can really come in handy.

Consider also your space. While a Great Dane might technically fit into any apartment in Gatineau, trying to share a one bedroom apartment with a big dog like that could be really constricting and drive one crazy. And I am not just talking about the dog!

Consider also walkies. Many people have dogs in apartments, even somewhat large dogs. But the dogs need exercise, even more than those in houses, rain or shine. Wind or sleet. Hail or deep freeze. Do you feel like taking a dog for a walk every day, no matter what? If so, a dog might be for you. If not, try a budgie.

And consider smell. In a more restricted space, odor control becomes more important. The litter box will be right under your nose, both figuratively and literally.

Pets in apartments are good for some people, but not for everybody. And for those who want a pet in their apartment, choosing the right apartment is critical.
