Subject: Dulcimer

I was doing some research on the Internet the other day on dulcimers and came across a web site some of you might find interesting. It is a site by a woman named Jean Ritchie who has been playing a dulcimer since she was a child. For those of you who need reminding, Brian Jones played a dulcimer on "Lady Jane," and "I Am Waiting" from the Rolling Stones 1966 classic Aftermath album.

There are many different types of dulcimers, but Jean Ritchie played a 'mountain' dulcimer, which was the same kind Brian played. It is also referred to as a 'lap' or 'Kentucky' dulcimer. I don't know exactly how Brian discovered a dulcimer, but I do know Jean Ritchie turned Richard Farina onto a dulcimer. Richard Farina was a good friend with Bob Dylan, who was good friends with Brian. It is possible that's where the dulcimer connection comes from.

Anyway, if you want to know more about the dulcimer go to www.jeanritchie.com and take a look for yourself. You can also purchase some books about the dulcimer from the site.
