Hello fellow Summer Jam attendants!
I was 15 in 1973, living in Elmira. My boyfriend and I headed out to the concert and were told to park our car and walk from Horseheads, where he lived. He knew the back roads, so off we went. We parked our car at least a mile away...there was a MASS of people everywhere. We had tickets, but no one was collecting them. After we got settled, of course I had to pee. The line of port o potties was to the right. When I opened the door after peeing, I headed towards where Michael was camped. It all looked the same...I'm sure I was probably high, which didn't help matters. Needless to say, I never found him. I was alone with no $$ or provisions. After circling the area for awhile, I decided to try and make it towards the stage for someone to make an announcement for him to meet me there. It took forever, but I made it only to be told no announcements could be made from the stage. There were naked people everywhere. Drugs and weed were flowing freely with people holding signs for what they were peddling. I met up with a guy from Queens who also lost his partner. He had some cash so we bought juice in a gallon jug and some watermelon. We were walking hand in hand through the crowd when a really tripped out guy decided he liked the looks of me and wanted some. Before I knew it, I had lost the hand of my only friend at the time and down I went on the ground with this dude on top of me trying to kiss me and take my clothes off all at one time. My new found friend rescued me and the crazy guy was taken away on a strecher. I only saw one law enforcement officer while there on the back of a horse joking with some of the attendants. The music was great, the weather was HOT during the day and then came the rain and cold. We slept on the hood of a car, but not for long. At the time, Elmira had 20-25 thousand residents. The only person I saw that I recognized was Tommy Hillfiger, but he didn't know me. After the concert, I got rides on the hoods/trunks of different cars making it to the Howard Johnson's in Horseheads. It was Sunday morning. I called my parents and they told me to call a taxi to get home to West Elmira. Poor Michael had walked back to the car a few times hoping to find me. He called my parents to say he had lost me. Of course they were thinking the worst...I was raped, murdered and thrown in the ditch. Other than the tripped out guy, everyone was very friendly and laid back. (could have been all the drugs!) It was a different way to enjoy the concert, but what a memory it made!
Leisa
