Nine of us left Long Island on Thursday afternoon for the trek that would take almost fourteen hours. We set up camp between the van and car with a huge tent.Friday evening myself and two friends(ironically one of whom would be my drug and alcohol counselor twenty-one years later)headed to the concert grounds to hold an area for all of us.We were about seventy-five to a hundred yards beyond the first set of speakers. When the sound check jam started we had no idea what to make of it until an hour or more later Phil Lesh said that it was just to test the sound system.Well after several hours The Dead ,The Allmans and The Band had all played. We had been partying all day and night and by this time the three of us had passed out.I can remember being woken up the next morning by people stepping around my sleeping bag as I stood up there were people as far as the eye could see ,I lit a joint and said this is far out.The Dead came out about noon time and I dropped a hit of mescaline and they seemed to be playing for five or six hours.I remember the parachutist but had no idea that poor soul had died. The skies opened up while The Band were doing a great show and after getting drenched it changed the mood. Some of us started heading back to our camp ,some listened to a little of the Allmans, I think only two watched the entire show(the two Woodstock veterans). There was a fireworks display over the grounds that evening and then it all caught up to us and we all went out like a light.I recall as we drove away the next day some radio station played The Allman Bros."Midnight Rider" for those who were at Watkins Glen. They said almost six-hundred thousand people were there and I laughed because my ex-roommate from college had written me to tell me about the concert and said there was going to be a hundred thousand people.Anyway I was cooked from that weekend and on Tuesday I started my job which I retired from thirty-one years later by the grace of God.Still this was one of the most wildest times of my life.RIP to all who are no longer with us.
