I was working at Roosevelt Field on Long Island in 1969. I bought a ticket to Woodstock for the Saturday concerts. It was raining in New York that (Friday) but had stopped so in the evening myself and several friends left Long Island for the ride north.
Some miles from Woodstock the highway was closed by the police. Steve Horowitz knew a guy living in the area. We got off the highway and rode the back roads to his friends farm where we spent the night.
At first light we drove with this resident of the area by back road to a place about 1 mile from the event. There we had to park the car and walk.
It was a short walk with many people. When we arrived at the event and crossed the bridge Country Joe was singing. A great crowd had gathered.
Throughout the day acts played.
On Saturday night about 6:00pm I positioned myself at the foot of a light tower, about 10 rows from the stage. Canned Heat started their set. Great music!
At the end of the set, without my knowing, 100's of thousands had joined behind me. When the set ended there was a roar from the crowd I will never forget.
All through the night the music played. Janis Joplin...what a musical time.
All of us were exhausted by the crowds and lack of sleep. We agreed to leave when the WHO took the stage.
I regrate not staying for Jimmy.
