1967, ein Jahr der Veränderungen, die selbst das behütete Leben im konservativen Nordwesten der USA nicht unberührt lassen. Doch auch ohne den Summer of Love würde sich die 17-jährige Susanna Kaysen wie eine Fremde in ihrer vertrauten Umgebung, ja, in ihrer eigenen Haut fühlen. Mit einem halbherzigen Selbstmordversuch manövriert sie sich in eine dramatische Lage. Für Susannas Eltern und ihren Doktor ist klar: Susanna muss in eine geschlossene Anstalt, das berüchtigte Claymoore Hospital. Dort wird sie von der verständnisvollen Schwester Valerie in Empfang genommen. Sie lernt Polly kennen, die sich selbst mit Benzin übergossen und angezündet hat, nachdem ihr von ihren Eltern ihr Schoßhündchen weggenommen wurde. Und die überkandidelte Daisy, die niemanden in ihr Zimmer lässt, in dem sie die verwesenden Kadaver von Brathühnchen hortet, die ihr täglich von ihrem Vater gebracht werden. Außerdem Janet, die unter zwanghafter Magersucht leidet, und ihre Zimmergenossin Georgina, eine pathologische Lügnerin, die in ihrer "Wizard of Oz"-Welt zurückgezogen lebt. Susanna erlebt zum ersten Mal die charismatische Soziopathin Lisa, die unumschränkte Anführerin der Mädchen, die mit ihrer exaltierten Art alle Blicke stets auf sich zieht ...
