The Military maintains extensive records and they will be able to provide you with a lot of information.

Click on the second link and download an SF180.
It takes a couple of months to get the information, but you can get quite a bit of data.
Regarding the 1973 fire-it will not affect your search. According to the goverment the records that were lost were Army from 1912-1960 and Air Force from 1947-1964. No other records were lost.
