*~and I sit tightly on Laredo's muscular bare back. His black coat glistens in the late winter sunshine and his strides are relaxed and his neck is arched. As we come to a shallow crossing on the river where I knew there were no sharp rocks or surprises, we walk through the water, Laredo splashing happily. As I feel him hesitate, I push him up the gentle slope, knowing he wanted to roll in the cool waterfall.

"None of that today, Laredo," I say. Now that we are on the other side of the river where it is totally flat, I decide to go for a canter. I leaned forward, and holding on tight, urged the stallion into a canter. He leaps forward, every muscle in him roaring to go. I laugh as his mane flips back, giving him a wild look. He snorts as if to ask me "Can we go faster?" I keep a firm hands on the braided leather reins to tell him that no faster than we already were.
To my surprise and delight, I see a small log about a hundred feet up ahead. Deciding a good jump was in order, I slowed him down to a slow trot and when we got up to it, I walked him around making sure that there were no surprises on the other side. Seeing none, I turned Laredo around and about two hundred feet back, I urge him into a canter again and he thunders towards the obstacle. Preparing myself, I felt his body tense for the jump. He came up to the right posistion and picked himself up and over the small jump. I managed to stay on and when we were away from the jump, I slowed him down to a trot and then a walk. Blowing only slightly, he obeyed and we went further down the river. Finally, we stopped and turned home as it was getting late and I still had to take care of poor Coco. I trotted him most of the way, knowing it was good if I was going to get him in shape from showing and about fifteen minutes from the stable, I slow him down to a walk to cool off. We see the stable in sight, leaving our beautiful river "world" behind.
