..... Do read about John the Baptist and also what Jesus, his pupil, is reported to have said about the "Kingdom of God". It seems to me that repentance was an early part, before baptism, of the entrance requirements for applicants for entry to membership of the Kingdom (Mark 1:15; Matt 4:17). See also Luke 24:47. There was also a gospel of repentance (Mark 6:12). According to page 1118 of Eerdmans Dictionary of the BIBLE (2000) "... the importance of repentance to the theology of the NT cannot be overemphasized." That article does not include "steps" of repentance, but mentions the initiation of repentance.
