The letter scroll had come by brown dragon along with the News scroll with news from all the Weyrs. It made Willmina smile as she went into the quiet, sunlit meeting room to go through it and the news scroll.
Taking one of the hide-padded chairs, she settled and busted the seal on Kaiten's letter and began to read. She could feel Shetanth rouse from sleep and come into her mind as she did.

'Dear Mina,

I know you've never thought much of Daven but last night he decided to flit off to a dark place with his brother's latest girlfriend. Geron's only known this girl less than half a Turn. Daven had invited me to a small fireroast he was giving. What a mistake!
Honestly, I don't recall her name but she's uglier than a bad runnerbeast with the teeth to match one. The sores around her mouth reminded me of herdbeasts whose harnesses are too tight and cause sores. H'fern said they were a disease. He doesn't like Daven and never has. Though he is a bluerider, he and Farepen joined us last night.
It seems all the history between myself and Daven is naught but wherryscat to him. This..woman.. was hanging on him like a cheap nightmate and Daven was clearly enjoying it. She certainly did not like me being around and made some effort to show it but I smiled while holding my tongue and ground. I remained at the fireroast until the desert chill made them break up and return to their tents. Since Daven was clearly in the mood for sleeping in a sand dune, I made sure he got back to his tent before finding my own way back. His apparent nightmate took her young son to clear up the small mess we'd made around the fire and looked pretty sullen about me walking her new 'mate' back to his tent.
I wanted to tell you all of this because I know you worry and you won't be hearing much more about him. I've tolerated so much out of him but this is the final shard!
He wants to come back to Nelharra to work and live- to be near his so-called 'friends'. He had the audacity to label me as such but it sounds hollow compared to what he's done to me and the trust we once had that was so fleeting.
No doubt, his draftbeast woman-mate will try to follow and drag her son and Geron along. It bothers me not, given what I have endured, but Daven as any sort of mate to me is someone I am forever done with now.

Tenna'

"By Faranth, Tenna."
Willmina muttered and rolled the scroll back up. Her longtime friend had been through so much with this man but this was wholly unbelievable. Tenna's salt-trader parents probably would not be told as they lived on the other side of the desert.
Kaiten was a lot like her except that she had light brown hair and grey eyes. She was not classically pretty which meant that the both of them were never sought out by boys or men. So many wanted a dune-roll instead of the pledges they gave to worthless sluts with looks.
Kaiten had been so stubbornly faithful to Daven. To get repaid like this!
Willmina's angry thought transferred to her Queen and brought a rumble from the gold giant on the ledge.

Shetanth knew of human love and affection from her rider and had felt her rider's anger at males before. Still, dragons could blow off these fierce emotions a little easier than humans because no permanent ties were made to the other dragons who 'flew' them.

-Flew another female that wasn't her?
Shetanth asked, a little groggy from sleep.

'Seems so. After all Kaiten has put up with.'
Willmina cracked the seal on the news scroll and paused.
'I have had thoughts of inviting her here. She would need to ask first.'

-No good. Her pains would still follow her until she faces them and goes beyond them.

Shetanth's statement made Willmina smile. It was a rare dragon wisdom that her gold possessed. It usually proved true, as well.
-Let her decide.

Willmina heard the tiny yawn in her Queen's voice and focused on the scroll to allow her Queen to sleep a little more. The morning flight could wait.
