Avidail stood away from the group who were sighing over the eggs. They all thought they weren't worthy. Avidail stayed silent, and rested her eyes briefly on each of the Candidates, her eyes dark and thoughtful. Brynn especially thought she wasn't going to get anything. Why do people doubt themselves? Why don't they just go for it? Why do they go for sympathy? Avidail wondered, for she saw it all the time in the Weyr. No one thought they would get the queen, they always sighed and looked sad. Avidail grinned faintly, the ghost of a memory walked across her spine. At home, the home she had left, you weren't allowed to wallow in self-pity. You were strong. Avidail turned her face to the eggs, so the Candidates wouldn't see the tear fall down her white cheek. Avidail shivered slightly. Everyone wanted her to be steadfast, the leader, the one who would always be strong. Why can't I every show anything? Avidail shook herself. She had worked for the control, and now she was losing it. I will try for the queen. For me, and for Lago, and for Lua, and for my family, and.. Avidail's mind flicked back to her encounter with R'geto. He seemed different. Less confident. That was easy to figure out. From what she had gathered, the two head riders didn't like bronzes. Poor Rireth. Avidail thought, imgaining the large bronze trying to figure out what was wrong with him. They used to be confident and dashing. Does Impression do this to people? Avidail wondered. She looked at the eggs for the first time, truly seeing them. Shetanth guarded them, like a queen flit. Or my mother. Avidail realized for the first time she had had a sheltered life. Her parents had told her what to do and showed her how to be sucessful and kept her away from the world. Avidail grinned lightly, her gaze resting on the large queen egg. I'm glad I went to Ilsili. It taught me. Just wait, little one. I'm here for you. And for R'geto. Avidail called to the eggs, not looking for one in particular. She looked at the queen egg once more, then turned away suddenly. Lua and Lago appeared on her shoulders, silently surveying each other.
"Good flits." Avidail said quietly. Lua straightened up, but the small bronze Lago curled around Avidail's neck, his tail lightly bound around her neck. The trio stood there, looking at everything and nothing, the willowly girl and her friends.
