I have read many posts, and have yet to comment, however, I cannot pass this one up without violating my conscience. First, let me say I am in agreement with the fact that one should let it be known that they will be working with their congregation. HOWEVER, your discussion about "appointment" of elders bothers me. As in some of your previous discussions about the Holy Spirit, and how some of its functions in men were only in the first century during the infancy of the church, consider Eph 4:11 and how "He gave SOME to be......" The qualifications for the initial sets of elders that were "appointed" were done so by "divine selection" if you will. In other words GOD chose them, not men. God for-knew that Paul was to be a chosen vessel for Him and would show him the things that he must suffer for His name, yet he still sent him to Ananias--who "appointed" him to his new work. What I am trying to say is that God knew the hearts of the men who were selected, or "appointed" as the very first elders of the New Testament church, which is why He had them appointed. Furthermore, An elder is ONLY qualified if he DESIRES the work, doo a word study on that particular word "desire". It indicates a very fervent longing "1) to stretch one’s self out in order to touch or to grasp something, to reach after or desire something". It is not just an "old man" that people would like to see in that position. It is also interesting to note that this is the FIRST qualification to be met. Would you elect a man to be the president of a company, or of the country if he didn't desire to do it? The man MUST be entirely qualified, and if he is, and ONLY then, may he be "appointed" , or set in place as an elder. There are audio sermons available on this topic as well as others here: http://www.matthew16-18.com/Elders.html
