Subject: What we may be seeing for next season...

I just read an article from Cinescape. GACT posted it on the SafeSearching board. Here's the article:

[[[Though its heroines face the same kind of paranormal foes that plague Buffy, Angel and "Spooky" Mulder, the WB series Charmed has never tied its storylines together with the kind of dense mythology that Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files are known for.

Until now, that is.

"We have been slow to create a mythology because we didn't want the mythology to drive this car. It's the sisters and their relationships that drive it. We're a show about three sisters who happen to be witches, not three witches who happen to be sisters," says executive producer Brad Kern. "But as we go into our third season, it becomes easier because the girls are well established. So we can begin to peel the curtain back on a mythology."

In the first two seasons of the series, fans watched the Halliwell sisters defeat one demonic threat after another. In season three, Kern says, the meaning of all those supernatural menaces and mishaps will all be made clear.

"At the end of the last season, we revealed that there was an organization behind the evil attacks over the first two years. It wasn't just random. And we're going to begin to put that organization into focus this year," Kern reveals. "The sisters are aware of it, so they're going to be preparing because they don't know what it really is and what it really means. But they do know it's not good."

But even though many of the Halliwells' enemies of the last two years were the pawns of a newly revealed conspiracy, that doesn't mean any of them will be back for a rematch.

"That's something that Buffy does a lot, obviously. But that's not going to happen a lot [on Charmed]," Kern says. "We like to think that once we've vanquished a demon, they're gone."

Instead , Kern and his writing staff will focus on creating new friends and foes - and at least one character who might be a little of both.

"We're going to be introducing a new male character. He's a soldier of fortune who's going to present an interesting challenge to the sisters," Kern says. "I don't want to say too much about him except my favorite way of describing him: There's a new cat in town."]]]

OK. Having learned of that, I have to say that I'm impressed by how Brad Kern was able to slowly introduce us to the character, although I wished he didn't have to make us wait that long.

Now as to what may happen next year, it will be interesting to see whether the creative people will avoid as much comparison to other currents shows with supernatural themes(Angel, BtVS, Roswell) or will it not matter so much. Up to now, Charmed as thouroughly entertained their target audience, which is young females between 13 and 39. Brad has explained some the reasons for the show's popularity. However, he knows that there's a sizable group amongst the same fans that want the show to become one of the cultural icons of TV history. This same group of fans are waiting for season 3 to be the make-it-or-break-it season in terms of long-term popularity of the show. In other words, Charmed should be up there with M*A*S*H, the A-Team, All in The Family, Happy Days and other memorable shows.

Now to what we may see next season, here are my predictions:

1) There won't be any more near-death situations, since the Charmed Ones will be stronger and they'll use what they've learned to continue to be one step ahead of their enemies.

2) There's going to be a theme about how they will going to be depended on to defend witchcraft itself as their enemies will use more refined tactics against them.

3) Piper will come at a crossroads when she finds out that Leo and her getting closer and solidifying their relationship gets even more difficult as it's evident that the Source(or whoever the organization is)has been able to disrupt the Charmed Ones unity somewhat.

4) Grams will make more appearances as the Charmed Ones begin to understand the metaphysical aspects of their calling.

5) Phoebe's new power would be something permanent of what she had during "She's A Man..."

6) Prue will change jobs again. I don't know which new job she will have.

7) Phoebe will drop out of college to dedicate herself more to the demon butt-kicking.
