Subject: Thoughts after watching

Perhaps this episode could be named "Reality Strikes Back." This latest episode is the sudden knock-down of the Charmed Ones from the highest perches possible. All of Season 2 could be considered the Year that the Charmed Ones Came to Be The Most Feared Good Gals In The Land. Or something like that. Hehehe. Now as we get into Season 3, those days have come to an end. Their enemies are re-doubling their efforts to defeat them. The Council are the ones who are going to go after the Charmed Ones first. They're the organization that sent the evil genie after the Charmed Ones. The Source is the one who sent that creepy fellow who cursed that guy into an owl and also the one who sent the 4 Horsemen. It seems that the Council are more serious about defeating the Charmed Ones than the Source, who are more decided in trying to conquer the world than go after witches. In time, they'll go after the Charmed Ones in spades as well.

So, the tables are being set for what may come for the rest of the season. The Council gets a head-start on the Source with Cole. However, the Source will not allow the Council to have the glory of defeating the Charmed Ones. Certainly not after seeing one of their bosses(that is the judge in "The Honeymoon's Over") get creamed by Cole. This is going to be exciting, assuming that the writers follow up on what they've been able to do so far. The interruption of the handfasting ritual was THE signal of the end of the "Pax Halliwell"

Now to the episode itself...not something to write home about. There was too much redundancy in the Charmed Ones getting all ga-ga over the site of a man at the front door. First, it was Dan. Now this guy. The woman's acting is forgettable; and that's the best thing I could say. However, the thing that interested me the most about "Magic Hour" is the concept of "handfasting". How did the writers came up with that idea?? Do books on witchcraft and wicca even mention handfasting? Perhaps it's another creative borrowing of an actual witchcraft ritual. Maybe Trish Telesco could help me on this one.

I read a comment in which this person said that Phoebe was quite unrecognizable in "Magic Hour" because she was afraid to take risks and she was often willing to take risks. Maybe there's a point, but I tend to disagree with that assessment. Pheebes is showing great concern that Piper's behavior is tearing apart a powerful team. In an ironic twist, Phoebe is doing here what Prue used to do in situations similar to this. It also fits a pattern in which all three are going through some slow internal changes, whose origins could be traced to the final six or seven eps of Season 2. If you can remember, Prue stopped being so corporate and started to explore some of what both excites and bothers her. Piper has been doubting her place in the group and started thinking about the direction of her relationship with Leo. Pheebs has started to make changes in her life outside the Charmed Ones, which indirectly impacts her view of life in general.

Which could explain why Grams came in at the time she did. I'm not going to explain how the writers came up with the idea that the Elders can't see what's going on while there's a solar eclipse. Perhaps they wanted to show that the Charmed Ones(and witches before them) were wrong and that the Elders did have the ability to watch them at all times. It was a weird way of showing it, though.

Other thoughts:
-So what happens to Leo? Is he being held hostage?
-Finally, an archrival in Cole.
-After watching previews for next week's ep, I get the feeling that they're going to ream Piper a new one. All of a sudden, she not only had to babysit Prue during "Be Careful What You Witch For" but not she could babysit both her sisters. How convenient...

Best Line:
Phoebe: If you wanted a supernatural Lo-Jack you came to the wrong witch.
