Subject: Possible Fire-toy problems

Some of us remember what road-repair and utility-repair crews used, before the electric blinker-lights and automated warning-signs. Those almost-ball-shaped flares that alerted motorists with a smoky, flickering little orange flame the rain and wind couldn't extinguish--are back, as novelty "patio torch" flares at BIG!LOTS™.

Don't bet the farm on the instructions/safety-precautions!

I bought three of the smaller size flares. The midline seam of the ball is the fill-line, according to the instructions, but that's about *8* fluid ounces--not 24 as the instructions claim. The instructions offer half an inch as the wick-height inside the burner. That won't even light with the recommended fuel--way too much wick. Half that is still too much; it's difficult to ignite and cannot be extinguished with the little snuffer-cap that comes chained to the flare, once it's going. The flame just engulfs the cap as if it were an added burner-component.

One of those coffee-cans that came with a peel-off foil top and that annoying inner rim (such as Maxwell House's 34.5-ounce) sits down on the flare's midline seam as if made for the job, to snuff it properly. It must be finagled past the attached ring but then it fits nicely. I recommend having one handy--along with about a 1A-10-B-C extinguisher in working order. I also use a heavy aluminum bakery tray I picked up from a liquidation-sale when a local BigBear store folded. Should the problems exceed poor operating-instructions, that's enough metal and containment to prevent a really big mess.

I haven't given up on these things yet--I bought them for more than dust-catchers. But there may be problems. Test-fire it in a safe area where you can easily keep control of things, if you're inclined to try one at all. RKBA! Best regards.
