Earlier, questions were raised about human cloning for research and theraputic purposes.
The idea (assuming I understood it :)) was to clone a person's cells into a new embryo, use the stem cells from that embryo to make new organs for him or develop genetically-tailored medicines and cellular corrective factors, and then destroy the embryo before it could begin growing. This research promised good things for people with diabetes, heart trouble, cystic fibrosis, cancer, athlescrosis, alsheimers, seisures, and many other diseases. It also resulted in the death of an embryo which, if left alone, would have developed into a new human being.
Me, being age-challanged lately :) and having a borderline diabetes, and looking forward to more age-related degeneration of this once-beautiful and fantastic body of mine, I'm quite interested in the possibilities raised by cloning and stem-cell research for people in my situation. But, I'm also very uneasy at the destruction of an embryo which otherwise would have become a human being. Proponents say the embryo would be destroyed before it even begins to grow, and that helps my conscious *some*, but it's still a thing with the potential to become human. President Bush opposes any kind of cloning (which *isn't* a recommendation! lately he ain't been doing too good, MHO) and so do many religious people; but many conservative and religious people favor it, or at least want to check it out.
Now, on the US Catholic Bishops website, I find a paper which argues cloning isn't necessary to develop stem cells... that technology exists to take ordinary cells from any adult and turn them into stem cells for research or therapy without the human-life issues arising from cloning embryos.
And the same site yields more info on why it is that some people want so much to make human clones ... and the reasons given are somewhat chilling!! See other papers on cloning here . But the issue is controversial and many people favor human cloning.
Did PrezBush call one right?
In faith, Dave
