He shrugged for no reason and chuckled, a miserable little laugh in lieu of a dark smile. "I'm sparing you the trouble of never knowing what I think of you. You can't catch what's already been caught. It was your choice whether or not to be my friend. I give people that one decision once they're in my docile prescence. And that's your choice," He began reading, while still speaking to her, seeming a bit less irritated by the passing confrontation. "So consider this a step in the stairway."

The car alarm is not a metaphor, but just a rehearsed annoyance. This is a new and brighter world, in which I am free to hurry along, celebrating my remarkable ability to walk, to run.
