Well, only in the last, oh, 3 years, have I begun to read the wonderfull and wondrous works of this British author. He is a master satirist who uses the fantasy genre and a horribly huge repertoire of puns to comment on modern society and stereotypes.
I can't begin to describe the wonder and thoughtfulness of this guy, and the emotions and thoughts he's provoked in me.
His main body of work is based on 'Discworld', a "planet" that consists of a disk of land/ocean upheld by 4 elephants borne on a huge space-turtle. Light travels rather slower than "normal". Death is a rather well-developed and charmingly sympathetic character. There's just so much to 'disc'over, I can't possibly relate in a mere posting like this the fullness of this stuff.
Most of it is incredibly funny. One work, "Small Gods" is a bit more serious, but very insightful. A few books, "Jingo" and "The Last Continent", I didn't find as humorous or deep as most of the others.
There are basically three groups of characters (who have more than one work devoted to their sagas). Rincewind, a "wizzard" who knew only one spell... the most powerful and important one in the universe. The constabulary of Ankh-Morpork, especially Commander Vimes, Corporal/Captain Carrot, and so many varied others. Finally, the "Wyrd Sisters" a coven of witches, headed by Granny Weatherwax.
This stuff is downright strange, but ANY RPer will love it... especially "Interesting Times". You'll see.
Love to all,
Jon
