Can someone please tell me the difference and how I can tell the difference between an APBT and an AST ??

I know they are similar but not the same and that they do look different but is there and positive Identification features?

The reason I am asking this is I found a stray this morning in the middle of a major highway and I took it to our local shelter and they listed it as a pitbull. I think it is a Staffordshire and would like to clear it up if possible.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

P.S. I work with a rescue group that adopts dog out of that shelter so there is not really any chance the girl I found this morning will be put down. I was just on my way to work and couldn't go all the way to the rescue group. The shelter was closer.
