Yes. The fruit is called Sakuranbo in Japanese. It's a kind of cherry.

What makes sakura beautiful is, it blooms when the tree is still leafless - the whole tree looks whitish-pink. Then the petals fall like light snow.

'Saku' means 'to bloom' in Japanese. It is THE blossom.

When I first moved to Japan, my office was somewhere in Shibuya (if you don't know where Shibuya is, ask your students or kids). I walked up a avenue to work and did not realise what those trees were - then spring came and I knew I was surrounded by Sakura trees.

One day the sakura petals started to fall. I saw three girls (looked like high school girls) laughing and jumping to catch the falling petals. They were so-and-so Japanese girls (still lovelier than HK girls) but they looked like fairies to me.

Life is beautiful. It really is.
