Hi Didge
I have read of various reasons for fur on Cacti.ie to protect from the sun. And in the case of Cacti from the Andes Espostoa etc to collect moisture from fog which then runs down to the ground. i am sure there may be other reasons such as insulation from the cold but The fur does servew a purpose.
