Actually a few and especially primitive cacti still have leaves - some with succulent (water storing) ones others with 'normal' non-succulent leaves. However most cacti do not need organs that transpire too much water, that is very dangerous in an arid environment. Photosynthesis is performed in the green water-storing swollen stems. The stems take over the function of leaves. It is a good adaptation for seasonally dry environments. Why good? The huge number of modern species shows that it is a very sucessful adaptation in this and many other succulent plant Families. Happy homework.
