Subject: 1825 - 1837 And Texas Was the Mexican State Coahuila y Texas

1825 - 1837: AND TEXAS WAS THE MEXICAN STATE COAHUILA Y TEXAS, WITH THE CAPITAL AT SALTILLO.

Mexico decided, North American’s can come to this Mexican State of Texas and Coahuila, after all. In those days, there was nothing but wilderness between
Nacogdoches and San Antonio de Bexar. And there were the Comanche and Apache people. So Mexico decided they could use some help from outsiders, to settle Texas.

Come on in, and this Haden Edwards fellow, and his brother Ben,
Were given some land to settle 800 families on….
Mexico referred to these land grants given to people as impresarios, -- Spanish for undertaking a venture. And so they did. But when they came, there were people
already living on this land of theirs.

What to do? The Mexican Governor had no clue. His hands were tied.

Well, this made the Edward brothers awful mad. So it was, around Christmas of 1826, Edwards, and 200 others, proclaimed, as if they could, and get away with it too, this land no longer belongs to Mexico. This land is our country now, the country of Freedonia.

The Mexican Army did not agree. And they ran the Edward brothers off.

So, what do you think?

Moses Austin, and his son, Stephen F. Austin, changed their religion to Catholic, so that they would also be allowed to become impresarios from Missouri, and bring a colony of goodly folks to the State of Texas and Coahuila. Moses died, but Stephen and a bunch settled in Texas.

Well, that’s fine and all, but General Teran, the leader sent from Mexico to rule this State of Texas and Coahuila: The Mexican government was concerned. They didn’t want too many people coming in who were from the U.S.. So in 1830,
They passed a law. No more of you. Can’t come in anymore.

And then the Mexican government decided to tax Texans, … tariffs and all that.

?

Can’t come to Texas, if you are from the U.S.A. Came to Texas, they did anyway.
Mexican soldiers tried to run people off, …. Or off to prison, without a trial.

From Alabama, a lawyer, William Barrett Travis, was jailed for coming to Texas.
He was jailed with a fellow named Patrick Jack, who had a brother named William.
It was William who riled up 160 men, so much so, they marched to the Mexican Fort called Velasco. ……a battle I tell you. They shot their guns and won.
The prisoners were freed, including Patrick Jack and the lawyer from Alabama.

The gossip was, war. Meanwhile, Stephen Austin pondered, and wrote up a petition, that suggested an all around solution to create a separate Mexican State, called Texas. And have everyone sign in. Agreeably, Mexico should see, that they merely wish to be a separate state of the very same nation.

Austin took this petition to Mexico City. And he waited and waited and never heard word, so he wrote back home that they should begin to prepare a state constitution.

Finally, Austin met with General Santa Anna, true ruler of Mexico, who said he would get rid of that tariff, however a separate state isn’t going to happen.

And then Mexico found out that Austin had written that letter back home. So they threw Austin in jail.

So, what do you think?

Meanwhile, the Mexican Army came demanding Taxes.

William Barrett Travis, that lawyer from Alabama, and 25 others did battle
with the Mexican army over this. Other men came to their rescue.

Remember also, there was no real protection for citizens under Mexican law. And the constitution of ‘24 meant little under the nation’s dictator, Santa Anna, who was nicknamed the little Napoleon.

Austin was released from jail, and went home. So what to do?

Mexican soldiers were told to fetch a cannon over at Gonzales.

The Texan’s wrote upon a make shift flag, that had a picture branded of that cannon they demanded: “Come and Take it.” … So they did. ….Bullets blew….and the Mexican soldiers fled to San Antonio to find word as to what to do.

The Texan’s surrounded San Antonio. No one could get in. No one could get out.
But the weather became cold, and the farmers tired of waiting, so they went home.

Meanwhile, word was out that they were fighting for Texas. So many men from the U.S.A. came to help out.

One Ben Milam, a Texan, led a battle in San Antonio, against General Cos, Santa Anna’s brother in law. This battle, the Texans won, although, Ben Milam lost his life.

Looking for volunteers now. What would you do?

At Fort Goliad. Texas held the fort. But they didn’t know whether to stay here,
or go to Mexico to fight. General Sam Houston said stay put.

And help came to Sam Houston. William Goyens, a black American business man, came to help. He was friendly with the Cherokees, who he knew would agree to
be absolutely no help to Santa Anna. And the famous frontiersman, Jim Bowie, came.

And Sam Houston was thinking they should burn down the Alamo, so that the Mexican’s will not be able to hold up there.
____________________________________________________________

They didn’t burn the Alamo down, so they had to defend it. There were only 190 men. The famous Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett were there. William Barrett Travis, the 26 year old lawyer from Alabama was commander.

And here they came, led by the General Santa Anna himself, along with 1200 Mexican soldiers. “Viva Santa Anna” were the screams. And all 190 Texans were slaughtered. If they didn’t die fighting, they were executed afterwards.

And that’s what you already knew. ..eerie old building set directly in the center of downtown San Antonio. (Around 1900, they clothed the Alamo to look like an old European castle, and turned it into a shopping center. Which is funny, as the Alamo was already 170 years old in 1900.)

1836, they signed a Texas Declaration of Independence. March second.

A fellow named Burnett, was chosen as Texas President; de Zevala, chosen as vice President. No time for an election until the war was won. Sam Houston, Commander of the Army.

Santa Anna’s troops marched towards San Antonio.
Up the Texas coast, 1000 Mexican soldiers under General Urrea marched. There were only 500 Texas soldiers at fort Goliad, so Houston told the commander there, a guy named Fannin, to get the hell out of there. But they were caught on their way out.

Santa Anna told General Urrea to kill all the prisoners. Some Mexican soldiers hid 27 of these Texans. The rest were executed.

The Texans didn’t have enough soldiers at this time. General Houston was waiting until they had enough soldiers. Meanwhile, the Mexican armies were all over the place,…burning towns, burning farms. Settlers all, took off for the U.S.

This occurred in ‘36, and is referred to as the Runaway Scrape.

President Burnett wanted to know if Houston was ever gonna fight.

Houston was building and training his army. And he had spies, such as Deaf Smith.

A young teen, 13 years old, named Joseph Powell had overheard Santa Anna talking at his mama’s inn. So he rode his horse all day and night long to tell Houston what Santa Anna said he was up to.

And finally, there was a mighty Texas force trained for battle.

Then, at the San Jacinto River, the buzz was that Santa Anna was there 750 strong, (400 more were coming). 900 Texas soldiers came. And they attacked in the morning, which was not common, and was not expected, at all.

Houston had Deaf Smith and some of his men destroy a bridge. There was water on three sides. No way out for the Mexican soldiers. “No alternative but victory or death”, said Houston.

Mid-afternoon, upon his famous white stallion, Saracen, Houston and his men road onto the battlefield, …in a line,… 1000 yards long.

The Mexicans could not escape. Shocked. Ill prepared. As they heard the Texan’s yell: “Remember the Alamo!” “Remember Goliad!”
The battle was over in minutes.

Houston attempted to stop the battle the very moment it was won, but Texas avengers attacked Mexican soldiers well after the battle was over. 630 Mexican soldiers were killed; 2 Texans died. Santa Anna disappeared; he got away.
[Dressed as a peasant, one of his soldiers told on him, and he was captured the next day. (Sitting under a tree.)] Houston made a point not to revenge. And as we should note, without the revenge, this story would have been great.
_________________________________________________________

May 14, 1836. Santa Anna signed two treaties at Velasco.
Treaty One, agreed Mexico will never fight for Texas again.
Treaty Two, was secret. Promised that Santa Anna would go home
and strive to have Mexico recognize Texas as an independent country
officially.

Many people wanted to have Santa Anna executed right there and then.
But President Burnett and Sam Houston were against revenge.

Texas became the country of Texas. Ten years later, 1845, four days before the new year of ‘46, Texas became a state of the United States.

“Explore Texas”. Houghton Mifflin…Fourth grade history.

*the bit about the Alamo being turned into a shopping mall around 1900 came from a book on San Antonio I read around a decade ago. There was an amusing photo of the Alamo dressed up in a castle outfit. Cannot locate this book. had a drawing of the San Antonio River on the front of it. …1920’s, directly next door to the Alamo was a car fix it shop. Excavation on Alamo land will find old car parts in consequence. By the way, 1940’s, and this guy had a great idea to pave over the San Antonio river and make a parking lot.

*A school knows success if a student not only leaves knowing things; but foremost, that a student considers learning fun, will then have an automatic higher tolerance for bigger reading, and will seek learning something for entertainment. A big book on this subject, “LoneStar“, by Fehrenbach, I have read personally; yet, best to know the subject some, first, and that way, if you enjoy the subject enough to read a large book on the subject, you will not need to earn the basic information, but will instead, learn more. Of course, if you are from Siberia, you are likely going to prefer the cut to the chase version on Texas.

Yes, this quick to the chase version needs to be written for Arizona and California, -- also formally known as New Spain. All states need this quick to the chase version.
