I don't race bikes or participate in endurance sports so I don't know what would push a person to dope. I know that people get so obsessed with endurance sports that they risk their lives and health to keep going or get those extra seconds. My brother in law is a respectable, level headed veterinarian and a marathon runner. Excessive running has destroyed his knees and badly exacerbted a bad back--but he won't lay off--and he's just a hacker--55 years old, not ranked, never a stand out, never won anything, yet he undergoes intense pain and puts his livelihood and his family's happiness at risk to run. Is this any different than the risks of doping?

This is probably the wrong forum to say this but endurance sports attract sick, compulsive people who are wiling to kill themselves to get to the next level. Remember the survey done a few years ago? They asked a group of young olympic hopefuls if they would be willing to die in five years if it meant winning olympic gold. Most said "yes." And children, and grandchildren, a life, a plan, experiencing all of the changing facets of existence? Sick.
