Doping may play a role. If the past years have made anything clear, it is that doping is part of the conditions that influence race and should therefore be among the speculations about why the results are as they are. The best example is Heras in 2005: why did he perform badly in the Tour and so good in the Vuelta? Part of the explanation is probably doping.

Back to the giro: it will be nice to see to whose advantage these conditions will be. Personally, but this moght be wishful thinking, I believe Cunego is someone who could benefit from a cleaner peloton. His recuperative ability might make the difference after several grueling days, when someone like Di Luca has to pay the price for an already long season.
