The difference is that Jalabert more often than not was the one taking the initiative, not trying to hop onto someone else's breakaway. So the guys that followed a Jalabert attack knew what they were getting into. Or if Jalabert attacked solo and came up upon a previous breakaway, they had a choice of working with Jalabert or having all their efforts to that point for naught.

I think Jalabert likely was someone who could be quite persuasive too.
