American pros ride because they love the sport. You're right that they can be silly and elitist, but that's no reason to make fun of them for the negligible renumeration many of them recieve. American pros have a lot of heart, and endure poverty and anonymity to participate in this sport, and they ride for the rewards of the sport itself. Many of the best of them have chosen to ride here, rather than in Europe because they wanted to continue to love the sport rather than be eaten alive by it.

Wearing a yellow Livestrong bracelet is hardly the measure of an athlete's character. Give our American boys in lycra a break, why don't you.
