Part of the reason Armstrong is so strong in the final kilometres of mountain is because he has had the best possible support throughout the previous 160 kilometres or so.

That strength allows postal to hammer the pace so that other teams with lesser riders start breaking down. It is a race of attrition - one postal after another sacrifices himself so in the end Armstrong (and this year Landis, who seemed to be at the end with Armstrong everywhere) could fire those jets and win the stage or get very close to it. But by that time the other teams are decimated and captian almost always alone or beat down.

Of course, an extraordinary elite GC guy like Ullrich can hang but eventually his not being able to conserve energy will affect him. Think about 2003 when Ullrich actually had to go and get his own water bottles because there was no team left to do it for him. Armstrong is just on another planet so it's hard to use him as an example. But all those expensive talents he hires are like victory insurance. He'd probably do it with less but why take the risk.
