I found that Ballo would criticize Rebellin's decision, inferring that it upset him- "a "big mistake...as an Italian his decision displeases me, if it's confirmed. However, everyone is free to make their own choices."

Funny, you've never hear Ballerini voice this criticism about Max Sciandri, who has ridden for the Great Britain team for many years, mostly because he could not make the Italian selection (it surely isn't his love for toad in the hole and treacle tart!). At least Max can take solace in the fact that he got his Olympic medal, while Rebellin has been denied a chance to represent his country while arguably on eof the best one-day racers in the land.

It's because Rebellin hasn't had a chance to compete on the Italian team that he's driven to do this. Look at the last three Italian World's teams:

Hamilton 2003
1 Ivan Basso (Italy)
2 Paolo Bettini (Italy)
3 Francesco Casagrande (Italy)
4 Danilo Di Luca (Italy)
5 Dario Frigo (Italy)
6 Giovanni Lombardi (Italy)
7 Cristian Moreni (Italy)
8 Daniele Nardello (Italy)
9 Andrea Noe (Italy)
10 Luca Paolini (Italy)
11 Fabio Sacchi (Italy)
12 Mario Scirea (Italy)

Surely Rebellin had a place here. At the end, Bettini had no teammates in the final, Rebellin would have been there.

Zolder 2002
Granted, the team was built around Mario Cipollini, who delivered but was there room for Rebellin? If not, why Diluca?

14 Paolo Bettini (Ita)
15 Gianluca Bortolami (Ita)
16 Davide Bramati (Ita)
17 Mario Cipollini (Ita)
18 Danilo Di Luca (Ita)
19 Giovanni Lombardi (Ita)
20 Daniele Nardello (Ita)
21 Alessandro Petacchi (Ita)
22 Fabio Sacchi (Ita)
23 Luca Scinto (Ita)
24 Mario Scirea (Ita)
25 Matteo Tosatto (Ita)

2002 Lisbon
Rebellin finished 5th Italian and in the same time as the winner

Francesco Casagrande (Fassa Bortolo)
Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo)
Ivan Basso (Fassa-Bortolo)
Daniele Nardello (Mapei-Quick Step)
Paolo Bettini (Mapei-Quick Step)
Paolo Lanfranchi (Mapei-Quick Step)
Davide Rebellin (Liquigas-Pata)
Gianni Faresin (Liquigas-Pata)
Gilberto Simoni (Lampre-Daikin)
Eddy Mazzoleni (Tacconi Sport Caldirola)
Massimo Donati (Tacconi Sport Caldirola)
Denis Lunghi (Team Colpack)
Danilo Di Luca (Cantina Tollo-Acqua & Sapone)
Giuliano Figueras (Panaria-Fiordo)
