Subject: Important BONANZA DVD News from Andy Klyde

I just got some insights from Andy...

CBS plans to continue to release BONANZA seasonal sets (and often an ENTIRE season at once), as long as the sales INCREASE with each release. We CAN make it to season 14, but ONLY if the sales increase in the next 12 months and beyond. Gunsmoke reportedly outsells BONANZA! Why is that?! There are factors and you can guess what they are. In this case, I don't think it will be to figure out what we should do!

The Studio Canal DVDs are merely the same masters Alamode had and who knows if they'll go past season 7?! I'd recommend not to buy them (expensive and duplicative of what's already out there) and not get burned. Stick with the GOAL of CBS releasing 3 seasons every 12 months here in North America and you can have all 14 years plus great extras in practically no time!

Rick, is that CBS,s goal of 3 seasons per year, I can live with that. I think if sales have not been as good as they would like they should improve now that we are getting into the non public domain episodes don't you think? as for Gunsmoke, I get encore westerns now and they show episodes from 1965 season 10 and I was surprised they were still b/w and I have not seen these there are probably alot more Gunsmoke episode that have not been seen since origional air date then Bonanza.

Hi Mark,

Yes, now that we are out of the PD episodes and it will be much easier to increase the show's success on DVD and complete season sets. Bonanza's first 6 years set the tone and established it, where Gunsmoke's first 12 years from 1955-1967 in B&W. That's 6 years longer than what it took for Bonanza to do. Frankly, I can't see CBS putting out Gunsmoke in complete seasons for a long time. That's 20 years and much longer than Bonanza, which is 14 seasons. Don't forget the later seasons has lesser episodes made and that will work out better for the final leg of DVD sets CBS releases, where the Gunsmoke volumes will still be trickling out. They can make money off Bonanza faster than they can with Gunsmoke and they know it. Another factor is Bonanza has my web site in the lead and some others and Andy Klyde (can't say the same for the other show), so Bonanza DVDs will always have a wealth of bonus contents, where Gunsmoke won't have anything to fill out its DVD sets out.

Mill Creek is loathed beacause they sell public-domain episodes of certain TV classics and that's comparable to bootlegging. No cheers to them.

My recollection is that CBS Entertainment issued each of the 3 seasons of Wanted Dead or Alive about 1 or 2 years apart. Each season cost about $45 each (could get it for a little less depending on where purchased).

Later I'd see all 3 seasons together for less than the price of one season. Now I see that Mill Creek Entertainment now owns the DVD rights to series, and all 3 seasons can be purchased for about $20 or $25.

My only point is that I think this is really all about marketing to get the best price possible.
