"Bonanza - the price of salt - how was salt used to feed cattle?
Recently I saw a Bonanza episode entitled "The price of Salt". Apparently, salt had a very important role in feeding cattle. Can anybody elaborate on this?

Cattle are similar to humans, in that they need salt in their diet to regulate fluid retention, and promote normal digestion. Fortunately, they will voluntarily lick salt blocks that are placed next to their watering troughs or watering holes, so normally no special salt supplements need be given.

If their diet is lacking in salt, they will lose their appetite, not gain weight properly, nor produce enough milk if lactating. Extreme lack of salt can cause death.

So, in Bonanza days probably more so than today, extremely high prices on salt would have had effects on the frontier similar to the Arab oil embargo of the mid-70's.

"Yes, sir", the bartender burbled, grabbing for bottles. "One Pernell Roberts Special coming up."
