Subject: Adam's Last Episode (Dead and Gone)

"Dead and Gone" was in Season 6, Episode 27.

The the cast know at that point that this was Adam's final episode?

If not, when did the cast actually learn that Adam had departed? Or when was the actual decision made for him to depart?

Thanks.

Everyone connected with the BONANZA company knew ol' Pernell would not be returning for a seventh season and beyond some time before "Dead and . . ." rolled before the camera. PR chose not to sign a new contract unlike the others, who signed sometime during the production of season 6 (maybe even just before). He left to audition immediately for Tyrone Guthrie's prestigious theater group in Cleveland and said so at the time to the press. Apparently the audition did not go well, as PR as far as I know never appeared in a Guthrie production. Betty Endicott has reported that she and PR had a farewell drink in a bar near Paramount after he finished his last scene.

Thanks Pete.

There is something about "Dead & Gone" that seems to have been written for Pernell, given that he gets to accompany a Hoyt Axton, a professional country/western singer, on a couple of occasions during the episode. I wonder if that was done as sort of a "send-off" or favor to Pernell.

There were actually some very good "Adam episodes" in Season 6 up to D&G. "Woman of Fire" being one of the best.
