I agree that Adam Cartwright would have made a fine Senator. For more on the idea check out SWC's second post in the "Quote from Pernell Roberts" thread started by Kayleetara back in 2013. The entire thread is pretty interesting.

Meanwhile, here is another season seven episode that mentions Adam:

"The Unwritten Commandment"
During the pre-credits opening sequence Andy Walker (Wayne Newton) asks Little Joe, "Have you heard anything from Adam?", and Joe replies, "Yeah, yeah got a letter from him last week. He’s in Paris now. He’s going to spend the winter and spring there." Later Andy plays Adam's guitar while singing "Danny Boy".
