Rawhide: "Incident at Dead Horse", a two-parter aired 4/16-23/1964. It starts with a pile of rocks. The drovers come upon it, wondering what it was. Then a hand appears, grabbing the rocks and tossing them away. They help unpile the rocks and find Burgess Meredith. His profession is hangman and he was on his way to hang Broderick Crawford, the most powerful and popular man in the nearest town, when he was intercepted by some of Crawford's admirers and buried alive. Crawford figures that he's safe because nobody in town will be his hangman. But Meredith is more determined than ever to do his job. (Sorry, no U-Tube clips.)

Have Gun, Will Travel: "The Ledge" 2/13/60
Paladin is on a stagecoach going through the mountains when a landslide knocks another traveler off a ledge. He lands on an out-cropping of rock below and lies there motionless. The passengers can't tell if he's dead or simply unconscious. Each has a reason why they don't want to climb down the cliff to find out: one is afraid of heights, one is a doctor who who can't afford to risk his life because he's the only doctor for miles. One is a businessman who wants to pay Paladin to shoot the man "to put him out of his misery" so they won't have to risk their lives to find out if he is OK. The stage coach driver laughs at them all- but never goes near the cliff because he's a coward underneath the laughter. A great theatrical peace that would have made a good play about the value of human life. (Again, nothing on U-Tube)
