When you're a star worth millions, the stunt double comes in handy. His weight later on was 300. He went down to 250 by spring of 1972 and was in great shape before the surgery.

Yes, John we noticed. And your point is? We also noticed that he, PR and Lorne all wore hairpieces and Mike wore lifts in his shoes. Adamseve

It was simply an observation. Hoss was the show's 'strong-man' and 'heavy lifter'. In the later seasons, he loses that aspect, has less to do and becomes more of a secondary character. Originally, all four Cartwrights shared equal status. But with Pernell gone, Lorne aging and Blocker out of shape, Landon becomes the 'star'. David Canary once said 'it was Michael's show'.

Degenerating format by 1970 as Mike told Canary not to leave. It was starting to go down. All 4 were stars. Mike Landon and his character had the most potential later on.

The actors can only do so much with the scripts they have to work with. Hoss is unforgetable in Erin in 1969 and he was very heavy and out of shape. He took that script and found a soulmate in Erin. He was real and genuine and in love. She was not too young, too beautiful or ditzy like Laura. In Feet of Clay Hoss did little more than pretend to sleep while fishing and love that little boy and it was one of his best performances. It was a time for better scripts not Jamie. adamseve

As stated above, Blocker lost a bunch of weight before he died. It would have been intersting to see a slimmed-down Hoss in Season 14. He would have had more to do. I always liked that last season and felt the scripts were an improvement over the three or four previous ones. Looking forward to seeing them again soon on Encore.

I find it a bit hard to watch him in the later seasons. It looks like he's gradually killing himself, the obesity is a problem for me. Rich TV star or not, why did those closest to him let him become so unhealthy.
